Tourist visa or business visa: which one fits your trip?

Tourist visa

When you’re planning a short trip abroad, it’s easy to assume any visitor visa will do. In practice, embassies look closely at why you’re travelling, and the category you choose needs to match that purpose. Here’s how to think about it before you apply.

Purpose comes first

The simplest way to decide is to ask what you’ll actually do during the trip. Visa categories are built mainly around purpose, although the length of your stay can matter too.

A tourist visa is usually meant for leisure: sightseeing, holidays and visiting family or friends. A business visa is usually meant for business activities that don’t count as employment, such as meetings, conferences or negotiating a deal.

Not every country splits these into two separate visas. Some cover holidays and short business trips under one visitor visa, with rules on what you can do during your stay, so we check how your destination handles it.

Typical tourist trips

A tourist visa usually fits trips like these:

  • a family holiday or a sightseeing tour
  • visiting relatives or friends who live abroad
  • attending a wedding or a family celebration

For these trips, the embassy usually wants to understand your plans, how you’ll fund the trip and your reasons to return home. A clear itinerary and consistent documents make that story easy to follow.

Typical business trips

A business visa usually fits trips like these:

  • meeting clients, suppliers or partners
  • attending a conference, trade fair or training event
  • inspecting a site or negotiating a contract
  • representing your company at an event

Business applications often need extra documents, such as a letter from your employer and an invitation from the company or event you’re visiting. Working for an employer abroad, or being paid by one, generally needs a different visa altogether.

Mixed trips

Many trips don’t fit neatly into one box. You might attend a two-day conference and then spend a week sightseeing, or visit a supplier while staying with family.

In many cases the main purpose of the trip decides the category, but the rules differ by country. Tell us exactly what you plan to do, and we’ll check the destination’s current guidance before recommending a category.

Why the wrong category causes problems

Applying under the wrong category can lead to a refusal. If your documents point to business meetings but you’ve applied as a tourist, or the other way round, the officer may doubt your stated purpose.

A mismatch can also cause trouble later. Officers at the border may ask about your plans, and your answers should match the visa you hold. A refusal can also stay on your record, and future applications usually ask about it.

Ask us before you apply

If you’re unsure, a short conversation usually settles it. We’ll look at your plans, suggest the category that fits and explain the documents usually needed. The exact checklist depends on your profile and the current embassy, VFS or official checklist, and we confirm it with you at consultation.
