Guidance for fresh and re-issue Indian passport applications through Passport Seva

A valid passport is the first thing every visa application needs. We can help you apply for a new Indian passport or re-issue your current one through the official Passport Seva system, and check that your application is complete and on the right form before it goes in.

Indian passports are issued by the Ministry of External Affairs through its passport offices. Miras does not issue passports and cannot influence the decision or the timing. We help you prepare a correct application and follow it through.

Who can apply

  • Indian citizens applying for their first passport
  • Passport holders who need a re-issue, for example because the passport is expiring, the pages are full, or it is damaged or lost
  • People who need to change personal details, such as their name or address
  • Parents applying for a passport for their child
  • Travellers who want to check their passport before a visa application

What you’ll need

  • Your current or old passport, if you have one
  • An account on the official Passport Seva portal, which we can help you set up
  • An appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra or another Passport Seva location, which you attend in person
  • Your planned travel dates, so we can plan the passport step around them

Documents usually required

  • Proof of date of birth
  • Proof of present address
  • Your old passport, for a re-issue
  • Supporting documents for any change of details, and annexures or affidavits where your case needs them
  • Additional documents for a Tatkaal application, if you are eligible for the scheme

Passport Seva publishes the documents it accepts for each type of application. The exact list depends on your case and the current official checklist, and we confirm it with you at consultation.

How the application works

  1. Book a consultation: tell us whether you need a first passport or a re-issue, and when you plan to travel.
  2. Document assessment: we check your documents against the current Passport Seva list and flag gaps or mismatches in names and dates.
  3. Application: we guide you through the online form on the Passport Seva portal and help you book an appointment.
  4. Appointment and verification: you attend the appointment with your original documents, and police verification follows where it applies.
  5. Tracking: you can track the application on Passport Seva, and we help you understand the status updates.

Processing time

Passport timelines are set by the Passport Office and vary with the type of application, appointment availability and police verification. We share the current published information at your consultation, and we suggest starting well before any visa application.

Frequently asked questions

Does Miras issue passports?

No. Indian passports are issued by the Ministry of External Affairs through its passport offices, and applications in India go through the official Passport Seva system. Miras is an independent consultancy.

We help you choose the right type of application, prepare your documents and follow the process. The decision and the timeline rest with the Passport Office.

Can you help with a Tatkaal passport?

Tatkaal is a Passport Seva scheme with its own eligibility rules and additional documents, so whether it suits you depends on your case.

Ask us and we will explain the current requirements. We cannot speed up the Passport Office or promise a date.

How much validity does my passport need for a visa?

It depends on the destination. Many countries ask for a passport that stays valid for several months beyond your stay, commonly six months, and for blank pages for the visa.

Check your passport before you apply for any visa. We confirm the current rule for your destination at consultation.
